On a recent Monday, January 16th, we enjoyed an annual celebration and commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr, one of the greatest and most inspirational civil rights leaders of all times. Through his activism he played a pivotal role in erasing the legal separation of African-American citizens in the United States as well as the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Did you know that King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964? Our evening was introduced with some poetry and inspirational writings by and about MLK. Then through the generosity of one of our long-term residents, who compiled a video with clips of musical tributes to MLK by Joan Baez, The Staple Singers and Ray Charles, we were able to relive the historical moment of Martin Luther King, Jr. giving his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C. The evening was completed by all the residents singing “We Shall Overcome”. It was a moving and inspirational night in tribute to all those who love justice and equality.
